Sports Floor Cleaning Guide

• Advice • April 26th, 2023

As any athlete or sports facility manager knows, maintaining a clean and safe sports floor is essential for the longevity of the flooring and the health and safety of those who use it.

However, not all sports floors are created equal, and different flooring materials and types require different cleaning and maintenance procedures. In this sports floor cleaning guide, we’ll provide some helpful tips and tricks for keeping your sports floor in top shape.

1. Determine your flooring type

Before you begin any cleaning or maintenance procedures, it’s important to determine what type of flooring you have. Different types of flooring require different cleaning techniques, and using the wrong method can cause damage or reduce the lifespan of the flooring. Some common types of sports flooring include Hardwood, Vinyl, Pulastic, Lino and Rubber.

 2. Regular sweeping and dusting

No matter what type of sports flooring you have, regular sweeping and dusting is essential to maintain its appearance and prevent dirt and debris from accumulating. Use a soft-bristled broom or microfiber mop to sweep the surface of the flooring regularly, and consider investing in a vacuum cleaner designed for sports floors.

Tip! Invest in some good quality entrance barrier matting at doorways, and this will stop a lot of dirt and debris getting onto your sports flooring at source.

 3. Regular cleaning

Weekly, it’s a good idea to give your floor either a damp mop with the recommended detergent or even better, run a scrubber drier machine up and down the floor. Scrubber direr machines make cleaning quick and easy and ensure that any water is removed immediately from the playing surface.

Tip! If water is still visible on your playing surface after 4 minutes, you’re using too much water.

Periodic deep cleaning is also necessary to keep your sports floor in good condition. This will remove body fats and cleaning product residues that build up on the floor, making them slippery and malodourous. Always use the deep cleaning product specifically designed for your own flooring and avoid using abrasive products, as they can scratch the surface of the flooring.

Tip! Why not consider having your floors professionally deep cleaned once a year. This can be very cost effective and ensures the best result.

 4. Address spills and stains promptly

Spills and stains should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent them from seeping into the flooring and causing permanent damage. Use a clean, damp cloth to blot up spills and stains, and avoid using harsh chemicals that could discolour or damage the flooring.

 5. Schedule regular maintenance

Budget for regular maintenance, your sports floor is an asset for your facility and maintaining it will pay dividends in the long run.

Timber floors in particular, can be sanded and relacquered (including court marking). But always use an expert for this type of work. This can help extend the lifespan of your sports flooring.

Consult with your flooring manufacturer or installer to determine the recommended maintenance schedule for your specific type of flooring.

In conclusion, proper sports floor maintenance is crucial to the longevity of the flooring and the safety of its users. By following these tips and consulting with your flooring manufacturer or installer, you can ensure that your sports floor remains in top condition for years to come.
